So suprisignly I have been playing a lot of zombie games of last year lately for some reason.I don't have a thing for zombies really.I never really cared. The first game that I played with zombies in them is probably Minecraft if memory serves right. But these last 2 weeks were full of the Undead suprisingly.Ohh and when I say Walking Dead I mean the TellTale one,not the shitty fps one.
Before you complain about how unfair I am against Last of Us because i just love choices and stories that interchange I will actually *ignore* that. And no i don't watch the series either. And before you tell me that those games are diferent I will tell you that they are both story-driven games based in world with zombies and that is enough of reason for me to compare them.I am willing to go with less, like compare the original Mega Man with Bioshock Infinite on the fact that you shoot robots in both games(weak comparison really because in Mega Man I actually wanted to keep playing[yes that's a burn for Bioshock]).
So sick burns aside let's first look at WHO made these games.Let's start with Naughty Dog mostly because my "relationship" with this company is more complicated. So Naughty Dog.What can I say about it that hasn't be said.I know:It's the most "the fuck you even" company I know.So what Naughty Dog does is this:
A) Make awesome game.B)Make some below average sequels.C)Kill the francice with a racing game. D)GOTO A. I didn't like Uncharted sure, but they are fine games and the only one that skiped C(so far). And unsuprisigly they yet again nailed step A with the last of us. GJ Naughy Dog on that, just make sure the PS4 game you are making isn't Uncharted Ruin Racing or some shit.On the other hand we have Telltale, the company that "has made every game ever".No really: Law and Order,Jurasic Park(awesome),Tales of Monkey Island(awesome),Hector(meh) and even a Poker game with Glados,Clap-trap and that copy of Bionic Commando. And Walking dead now,or like a year ago.Big fan here,so I have to give that point to Telltale.Oh sorry my contractors said I am not supposed to give points.Never mind then.
Next up is the zombies, cause not talking about the zombies in zombie games is like not talking about the towers in a tower defence game.Walking dead is litarally that, corpses that move on a fairly slow rate. They are the good old zombies we all know and hate.We are all infected and if you die you become one of them.Bites only kill you faster.Shoot em on the head and they die forever.Maybe like the series maybe not. The last of us zombies are more unique. Its actually infected here with some kind of mushroom that controls the host.Breathing in the spores of that fung and you become one of them. But for some reason the bite also work, are there spores in their teeth maybe?Never mind that. There are three kind of infected.Runners, the newly infected that can see, the Clickers the long time infected that cant see but hear impecably and cause insta-death and the Bloaters that throw some shit and have big defence.Gotta admit that LOS did it better. You could argue that there were more than one type of zombies on WD because each zombie is unique but than I would tell you that even thought the LOS zombies are basicly copy paste versions of each type these zombies are actually differently dressed depending on the area.Heck, in an area that there were a lot of soldiers the zombies of that area wore helmets making them harder to headshot. So yeah point to LOS.Alright I'll stop it with the points.
Story wise I was kinda disapointed in the fact that they both tackled a lot of common themes. Caniballism ,are zombies still alive in there, kill yourself or stay to fight etc. I guess that some HAD to be tackled by both sides and just a couple would be fine I guess. Anyhow I kinda feel that WD did it better. Not just the choices(which is fucking important but I promised) for one important reason:LOS is twenty years after the begining of the apocalypse.Basicly I could say the exact same for the general cast, WD did it better. You can can actually see these people trying to figure their situation out, planning, exploring, crying, investigating stuff like Batman and Robin, betraying each other. Yeah some of these are there in LOS but in LOS there is in a sense a rebuilt society. They know what to do, how to act in cases. Also WD has choices which is pretty important.
The main characters also have a common formula:A grown man and a little girl.Joel(voiced by Troy Baker *high piched fangirl scream* I,m sorry) and Ellie on LOS and Lee and Clementine on WD.Their relationship is pretty diferent.Between the LOS couple the chemisty is the same as the one between Hydrogen Sulfide and Nitric Acid.Unexpectedly explosive. All the dialogs are around the fact that Troy Baker can't pronounse the words "thank you" and "good job".Lee and Clem on the other hand is super cute.Lee just wants to do just protect Clem, not just from the zombies but from the world itself. It feels more organic.Joel does turn around a bit and he isn't just a jerk that hates every single thing that smiles.Ellie feels better thought. She carries a knife and murders people.Knows how to shot and murders people. She can protect herself. And murder people.Clem on the other hand is in constant need of help. She learned how to shoot mid game and actually helped in the last chapter of episode 4.So yeah 10 points to Gryffidor.
And let's get to the cherry of the cake. The Gameplay.Ok these is different in each game.LOS reminds me of the Metal Gears kind of style. You can stealth or you can go guns ablaizing. The second one is kinda discouraged but you can do it.Heck even running away from your opporents is a viable option. Its a third person shooter. What's more to say?WD is a good point and click.Basic puzzles and no logic jumps. Not the kind of style that try everything with everything.Ok I promised I wouldn't do it but I have to emphasize to the choices now.Dialoging is half the game.Chosing what to say and remembering that they will remember is most of what you do.
Ok time for my epilogue. They are both wonderfull games that I love.Ok I like WD more, but mostly because I like puzzles and choices more than third-person shooting. That is the reason thought that WD got all the way to my top-10 games single handendly. But I really believe you should go for whatever floats your boats. It's actually one of the few times I won't judge. Now about that Megaman Vs Bioshock article.
